The pandemic certainly played a critical role in accelerating a shift to remote work. It was more or less a reactive step to reduce the spread of the deadly virus. However, in the post-pandemic era, employers have had to reimagine the traditional roles of office work and got accustomed to working from home (WFH).

Nevertheless, it is interesting to know that a significant portion of the workforce loves working from home; some fancy a hybrid model while others still prefer the traditional working in an office setup.

One survey of 2100 done by FlexJobs found that 58% of respondents said they would love to continue working from home post-pandemic. You might be wondering- why?. Here are some of the factors that are making WFH much more attractive around the globe:

Along with TeamViewer, LogMeIn is one of the original remote digital workspace solutions. The company went public on NASDAQ in 2009 and simultaneously discouraged any competition and built a huge user base among IT consultants and remote workers by initially offering their product for free. However, freemium had its end, and in January of 2014 LogMeIn abruptly converted its freemium based product to a paid model that, both angered much of the userbase and opened the door for LogMeIn alternatives like RemoteToPC.

Without a competitive LogMeIn replacement, many of its freemium customers bit the bullet and paid the sudden fee to keep access to their remote systems going. However, no one could have predicted the meteoric rise in the cost of LogMeIn in the next few years. Every couple of years they seemed to raise prices again until finally in 2021 they eventually would blow out all expectations for the cost of remote access software.

What once was free, by 2019 cost $1688 per year for a base plan to access 100 remote computers. Many of its advanced features had been pulled out into 3 different levels of service to add on to the base plan each costing from an additional $1080 to $1236 per year. Though it was a more advanced offering than the freemium product of 2013, within 6 years, a public company beholden to increase profits for stock investors would cost up to $5220 for 100 remote systems to include all the bells and whistles. In 2020 LogMeIn suddenly delisted from the stock exchange, converting back again to a private company, and since then, it’s been lowering prices to try and keep or gain back some of the formerly loyal customers that had been pushed too far with its seemingly never-ending price increases.

Today in addition to RemoteToPC there are many cheaper alternatives to LogMeIn, but none of them are quiet as much like LogMeIn Central Basic as RemoteToPC. When LogMeIn started charging, that was day 1 for RemoteToPC in our minds, and we haven’t stopped working to improve and advance it, to better security than LogMeIn, becoming faster, and offering more base features for less has been our goal from the inception of RemoteToPC.

Best LogMeIn alterntive 2022?: 

Perhaps sensing the ride had ended, and with customers straining under the price, and many of them finding RemoteToPC as one of the best LogMeIn alternatives, in 2020 they suddenly delisted from the stock exchange, and started dropping their prices. As of the writing of this article 100 seats of LogMeIn Central basic was dropped from $1688 per year to $1440 per year, and with a 15% off Christmas Special running they appear to be keen to win customers back. The 3 feature sets have also dropped from $1236 down to $1080 for Security and Automation and from $1080 to $948 for Insight. Have they not however proven that they are only out to get whatever they can from the customer, with no real thought for the impact on their customers business?

At RemoteToPC, we have not raised our prices from day 1. This is not to say that we will never raise prices, but for $299 per year our customers get 100 seats of RemoteToPC, which even has some of the reporting, and monitoring features of the LogMeIn add-ons included.

While they have not added any new features in 2021, RemoteToPC has been busy, adding chat, and drag and drop file copy among other things. We’ve also got better TLS V1.2 / AES-256 encryption, and in addition to two-factor authentication, the ability to stack the RemoteToPC login password with Windows login password providing better security than LogMeIn. For customers that need access to just a few computers, we offer RemoteToPC basic, which includes unlimited access to up to 10 remote computers for $99 per year, which compared to LogMeIn PRO at $1524 which is over 15X more expensive, they’ve still got a long way to come back down to earth in order to offer a competitively priced remote digital workspace product.

Of course, we’re biased, but why would you choose them over RemoteToPC? We’re a Texas founded and based company that cares about our customers, and their businesses. We’re not going to overcharge you, or deny you a refund if you’re a day late to cancel something. Though we like to think that we are one of the worlds most advanced products of its kind, we still have old fashioned values such as integrity. We believe they made a crass money grab, and took advantage of little IT companies and others who had no alternative, but now you have a choice, and you should stick with a company that is going to be steady, reliable, and that you won’t wake up one morning and find that we’ve changed our prices 5X.  

So, the question remains, is LogMeIn still the gold standard for the digital workspace? Perhaps if you can afford a digital workspace made of gold, but we suggest you try and stick with RemoteToPC. We’d be happy to be considered the silver standard, but only costing you pennies comparatively.

RemoteToPC started out mainly as an affordable LogMeIn alternative. Coming from the IT industry we were looking to create an affordable alternative for LogMeIn and to the ever-increasing cost of remote computer access software. We found ourselves in the middle of a lot of well-funded competition and we had to work hard to carve out a name for ourselves. One thing we did to try and stand out was to offer other built-in features such as monitoring and alerts (Sort of like LogMeIn Central had) with every installation.  As far as we know we were the first entry level remote access company to do that, so in that sense we had an impact on the industry, being the first to move in that direction with Remote Access for IT. We stuck with our “Made by IT for IT” tag-line and focus up until earlier this year. Now we just want to be go-to remote access software for everyone.

RemoteToPC has always had some customers outside of the IT world. Mom and pop businesses, insurance companies, local governments, non-profits, churches, law-firms, just about everyone who does work on computers also appreciated our affordable and reliable remote access solution. But we also maintained our focus on IT, partly because that’s what made us different, but also because that’s what we knew, and that’s the industry sector that we wanted to help. So we sort of had a mission to help companies that were like us have affordable reliable remote access.

We started to re-evaluate that focus and direction in late 2019 and with the pandemic of 2020 it became clear to us that we had a much broader audience that needed RemoteToPC. Users can now pop-out their remote screens inside of the RemoteToPC viewer application and place them in whatever local monitor they want.  It makes it hard to tell you’re not right in front of the remote computer. So, the goal has been to try and get out of the way of the user experience, working towards remote seamless integration.

We’ve broadened our viewer to be universal, so now users can connect to a PC or Mac host computer from any device, smart-phones, tablets, Linux systems and of course other PCs and Macs.

One thing we’re really proud of is that unlike other remote access software providers we added all these features without raising our prices. It’s inspiring to us when we regularly get feedback from our customers telling us how much they appreciate RemoteToPC, love our customer service, and appreciate our new features. This is a big reason why we do what we do. We believe that people are more important than things. LogMeIn Central pricing has changed from its long-held pricing three tier structure of LogMeIn Basic, LogMeIn Plus, and LogMeIn Premier to a single base product which is roughly twice the price of its former Basic level of service. It’s no wonder many are scrambling to find a LogMeIn alternative. 

Formerly 100 LogMeIn Central Basic computers annual subscription cost was $899.99/yr. Currently for 100 computers under their “Base Plan” the subscription cost is $1668.00/yr.  Nearly double the former LogMeIn pricing.

Now instead of 3 different levels of service, there is just one “Base” plan, and then there are three add-on feature sets named: Security, Automation, and Insight. Each add-on includes different features that used to be bundled in the previous 3 tiers of service:

  • The Security add-on includes features like: Patch management, Windows Updates, Antivirus Management.
  • The Automation add-on includes their One2Many Task Management, PowerShell Scripting, and Automated Actions.
  • The Insight add-on includes things like Asset Inventory, Custom Reporting, and Critical System Alerts.

Each LogMeIn add-on comes with added cost.

For a 100-computer base plan, the Security add-on would add an additional $1236/yr. The Automation add-on would also be an additional $1236/yr., and the Insight add-on would add an additional $1080/yr.  So, if you needed some of the features in each of these different add-ons for your hypothetical 100 computer situation, the annual subscription cost to you for those 100 computers would be: $5220/yr.  This is a significant increase over the previous pricing structure, where for those same 100 computers you would have paid: $899.99/yr. (Central Basic), $1999.99/yr. (Central Plus) or $3499.99/yr. (Central Premier).

It’s just another LogMeIn price increase.

However you look at it, this is a massive price increase for LogMeIn Central users. If you chose to only have the base Central plan for 100 computers, the price increases this year is 85% more. If you choose all the add-on options the price increase for you over Central Premier is an additional 49%.

RemoteToPC is a great LogMeIn alternative.

Of course, if you chose to LogMeOut of LogMeIn, and go with RemoteToPC, depending on how you look at it, you would be paying 82% to 94% less for our 100 computer plan, which is only $299/yr. We haven’t changed our prices since 2015, and RemoteToPC comes with some of the features that LogMeIn only includes in their add-ons like Monitoring and Alerts.

The pricing of LogMeIn Pro only increased very slightly, so this latest price increase is essentially a blow to a typical IT management user of LogMeIn Central. Managed Service Providers, IT consultants, and in-house IT staff will need to consider if continuing on with LogMeIn is worth the increase, or if a LogMeIn central alternative like RemoteToPC is worth switching to. If not now, then how much of a price increase will finally be enough to move on?

Many IT people who use their Central product come to RemoteToPC looking for a LogMeIn alternative, but many small business users of LogMeIn Pro are also starting to discover us as a much more affordable remote PC access alternative. Following their widely publicized purchase of GoToMyPC last year, we were on the lookout for LogMeIn to raise their Central pricing this year like they did last January. We were hearing new customers complain about the cost of LogMeIn going up back in December, but kept checking in and seeing that their Central pricing was not changing. We thought they had decided to not raise prices. We were wrong.

Some internet searching again this week brought up a short post that Splashtop had made. It turns out that they were not going to increase price of the LogMeIn Central product this January, but instead they had a LogMeIn Pro price increase. According to their research into LogMeIn pricing history, this January was a 40% increase over last year. From $249.00 in 2017 to $349.99 starting in 2018. For accessing just a few computer systems, this no doubt seems an onerous jump in price to many corporate and small business users.

Since RemoteToPC is made by IT people for IT people, most of our former LogMeIn customer base who decided to “LogMeOut”, comes from the LogMeIn Central product standpoint. However, we do attract a fair share of accounting firms, and other small businesses that just need remote access to PCs at a reasonable price point. For those small businesses that use PC’s we believe that RemoteToPC is an excellent and much more affordable LogMeIn alternative.

LogMeIn cost vs RemoteToPC : 

RemoteToPC offers our Basic remote desktop solution to up to 10 remote PCs for $99 per year. We don’t anticipate that pricing changing anytime soon. While this is enough for most small businesses, we also offer 20 remote PC computer plans for small business. Our Enterprise level plans start at 100 endpoints per year. Enterprise plans come with additional features such as user management. User management allows you to assign which users can access which computers.

As we’ve mentioned previously, LogMeIn began its rapid ascent into its current pricing levels back in January of 2014. That’s when they first started charging for their formerly free product. They added another increase in Jan 2015, skipped Jan 2016, and added another in Jan 2017. So, it seems obvious why everyone starts looking in January, because that’s the big month for upping their prices. Last year they bought fellow remote access product GoToMyPC (Go To My PC) for 1.8 Billion. This is sure to place them at over 1 Billion in annual revenue making them the 800lb gorilla in the industry. The move seems to have had the desired effect with their stock prices continuing to go up.

Those who’ve sought a LogMeIn alternative : 

With those who jump off the LogMeIn ship, there are a number of products like Splashtop, or TeamViewer. We’d like to think that as far as more of a LogMeIn Central alternative, we have them all beat. RemoteToPC’s Command Center offers a clear view to IT people of all of the remote systems that they’re responsible for. System metrics give them alerts to troubled systems, and the way rows are laid out, access is quick and simple. The system metric monitoring that RemoteToPC does makes it more like the LogMeIn premium product. Splashtop and Teamviewer cost in the same range and yet don’t offer that kind of monitoring and alerts built into them.

We’ve recently added Android support, along with Remote Reboot,  Wake-on-Lan, and 2-factor authentication. Many people in the IT community have been waiting for this. Even some LogMeIn competitors didn’t believe they would do it again, yet they did. Yet again in January of 2017 they raised LogMeIn Central prices. This makes RemoteToPC an even more attractive LogMeIn alternative in 2017, as our pricing is considerably less than those for LogMeIn Central, or Pro.

For example: LMI Central 100 computer Basic was $699, now it’s $899 Plus was $1499, now it’s $1999. Premier was $2999, and now its $3499

We thought LogMeIn pricing was too high back in 2015-16. This new level in 2017 is may help drive up their stock value for their shareholders, and help pay off their $1.8B acquisition of GoToMyPC from Citrix. It seems clear however that small computer consulting companies, and MSPs are the ones taking the hit for all that. With their purchase of GoToMyPC, they will be grossing over $1B per year, making them the 800 pound gorilla in the room compared to all of the other remote access solutions out there.

RemoteToPC vs LogMeIn from a price standpoint is a hands down win for RemoteToPC. RemoteToPC pricing for the 100 computer plan  is currently $299. While we don’t offer every feature that LMI does, as of this publication we do provide:

For example the ability to copy files is only available starting in their Plus plan. Features like Monitoring and Alerts are found in their Premier plan.  People who have a LogMeIn-Pro subscription for small numbers of computers will find the pricing of our smallest plan at $99 will cover them for up to 10 remote systems for a year. 

While LogMeIn stock is near an all-time high, it is unclear where they intend that these increases in price will stop. The addition of the GoToMyPC remote access customer base is sure to keep the annual gross earnings over 1 billion, and they may have factored in the loss of some LMI customers, who move on to LogMeIn alternatives due to this increase. LogMeIn pricingThey could potentially show a huge gain for shareholders this year even with the loss of 20-25% of their LMI business. While it might not make much sense from the standpoint of keeping their remote access customer base happy, it makes sense that their shareholders would be extremely happy in that situation.

From their annual revenue growth in profits since they started raising prices back in January of 2014, raising the LogMeIn price has been nothing but rewarding to them. As long as they are continually rewarded for it, it is likely that they will continue to do so. It seems however that at some point they will reach the tipping point where those who buy a LogMeIn-Pro, or LogMeIn Central subscription will simply say “no more”.  Many have already done so, and we expect more to do so as time goes on. All over the internet, you can see articles geared at people looking for alternatives to LogMeIn Central, and their suggestions are always the same old products like Teamviewer, Bomgar, ScreenConnect, Splashtop, etc… If an IT person is just looking for a remote connection client with competitive pricing, then those are valid alternatives, and some may claim that they are better than logmein, but none of them are a true LogMeIn Central alternative.  Here’s why: LogMeIn central pricingBecause  central  comes in 3 different tiers of service with varying levels of features:  Central Basic, Plus and Premier. The Basic plan only offers a more basic set of features with an online Command Center. You have to select the Plus version (for more money) if you want the ability to copy files between PCs, and finally if you want any kind of Monitoring and Alerts, you must purchase Central Premier (for a lot more money!)

As IT people ourselves, and from some of the feedback we have had from customers, the ability to copy a file from one computer to another can be a critical need. For LogMeIn, they charge twice the money for this feature. When they first implemented their new pricing, it was file copying, and multi-monitor access that they used to force users up to their Plus plan. This was apparently too much for too many Basic plan customers, and they soon offered the multi-monitor feature back in their Basic plan, while leaving the ability to remotely copy a file in their Plus plan. LogMeIn’s Premier plan has robust monitoring and alerts for proactive monitoring of computer systems, but at more than 4 times the cost of their basic plan.

At the time this is being written, LogMein Central Pricing for 100 computers is: $699 a year for Basic, $1499 a year for Plus, and $2999 a year for Premier.

We built RemoteToPC as a low cost alternative that has many of the same Central features, but have deliberately modeled our pricing to beat out their lowest price, while also offering key features that they feature in their higher level plans. RemoteToPC has a Command Center and Remote Desktop Access similar to LogMeIn Basic, File Copy similar to LogMeIn Plus, and we even offer basic Alerts and Monitoring similar to LogMeIn Premier.  All currently at $299 a year for a 100 system plan.

For the features we offer, we don’t think anyone can touch our pricing. We think that RemoteToPC is a new kind of product. One designed to give you the best experience by merging the core features of advanced RMM tools with a basic remote access client, and that’s priced at a very low cost.  We don’t think the cost of IT tools should be punitive.
